System backup on Android
You have probably come here from the banner in the app's Settings. It says: “If your device's system backup is on (Google account), it can also save Owndom's data. The cloud backup below is separate.” This page explains that sentence.
What the system backup is
Android backs your device up to your Google account by itself, and app data can go into that backup too. When it runs and what exactly it takes is up to Google, not Owndom.
You switch it on and off yourself, in your device's settings. Google's Android help explains how. Owndom can neither switch it on nor switch it off.
What it keeps of Owndom
The system backup can save everything you have put into Owndom: items, properties, contacts, communication and attachments. It also keeps the app's settings, such as language, theme, currency and the cloud chosen for the backup.
When you restore a device from the system backup, three things don't come back by themselves:
- your sign-in to the cloud account: in Settings, in the “Backup” section, connect again, and the backup keys then come back from the cloud;
- device permissions, such as notifications and battery: these are device settings, so the app asks for them again;
- your consent to error reports: the app asks again.
When your data gets large
The system backup does not take an unlimited amount from any one app. Once Owndom's data gets large, it may stop saving it. Where that line is, Google decides, not Owndom.
On the free version the app then warns you in Settings: “Your data is getting too large for Android's system backup, which may stop backing it up. Upgrade to Premium for a full cloud backup.”
Owndom's cloud backup is something else
With Premium, Owndom makes its own backup, to a cloud account you choose. It holds all your items and attachments, and when you restore, you choose which copy to bring back, as described in Choosing a copy to restore. It is encrypted, and the key sits on the same account as the backup; what that means is in Who can see your data. How to set it up is in Backup. The cloud backup also lets you move the same data to another device; how to set that up and how it works is in Using Owndom on more than one device.
The cloud backup doesn't switch off the system backup, and the system backup doesn't switch off the cloud backup. Unless you have turned the system backup off yourself, you have both.
